Experimental Studies on Trichomoniasis

II. Immunity to Reinfection in T. Vaginalis Infections of Mice

From the Chemotherapy Laboratories, Hoffmann-La Roche, Inc., Nutley, N. J.

Abstract

1. Marked immunity towards an intramuscular reinfection with Trichomonas vaginalis was observed in mice previously infected with live trichomonad culture in the leg of the opposite side.
2. Immunizing infections with a dose of 125,000 parasites are necessary to produce immunity within a 2 weeks' period.
3. After an immunizing dose of 500,000 parasites per mouse immunity towards reinfection was observed after one week. The immunity lasted 10 weeks and showed only a slight decrease after 15 weeks.
4. The presence of a well developed trichomonad abscess seemed essential for the immunity, the mechanism of which warrants further investigation.
